Black & White Retna Mural

RETNA (aka Marquis Lewis) is a grafitti artist who was born and raised in L.A. According to New Image Art, "His work merges photography with graffiti style and paint, time with color, couture with street culture, the spiritual with the sensual, and fluidity with grit. Whether his paintings hang in a gallery or wall on the streets of Los Angeles, they serve as a retina through which we view the urban journal of contemporary-art." How's that for inspiring?

This huge, beautiful white & black Retna mural is located at 8826 Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood. Retna has painted various other murals across Los Angeles, and I've had a chance to visit his Black & Gold Mural and Silver Mural.

Public Art: Liquid Shard

Well, this sure isn't your typical Downtown Los Angeles scene... {see my Instagram post for the video - and turn your speakers on}.  "Liquid Shard" by artist Patrick Shearn is a kinetic sculpture which has currently made its way to Pershing Square, smack dab in the middle of Downtown. It flows majestically in the wind, and the silver streamers create a rainbow effect as the sun shines on them. It's simply stunning to observe, and it almost looks like there are diamonds hanging from the sky as you walk underneath it. This mesmerizing canopy of iridescent streamers is slated to be on display until August 11, and I'd highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance!

I love public art because...
I keep seeing news stations and articles referring to Pershing Square as the "eye sore of DTLA" and how it's scheduled for a massive redesign in 2019. It's so interesting to me how public art installations like this one bring some members of the community to a place they may not have explored or visited otherwise. I'm a fan of public art because 1) it give individuals a HUGE platform to express themselves, 2) promotes the importance of art, creativity, and imagination in a society that thrives on structure, and 3) challenges us to stop and ask ourselves "Wait... What the heck is that? How does that make me feel? What does this represent to me or my community?" This piece of art to me represents finding the calm within the chaos, something I'm always working on internally when life gets chaotic, busy, or stressful. I love the irony of this incredibly peaceful and calming work of art located in the middle of the most popular and bustling area of DTLA. Food for thought!

Here is what you need to know:

The Artist & Design Group: The artist is Patrick Shearn and the he oversaw the project designed by Poetic Kinetics, the same design group that created the giant caterpillar at Coachella (I wasn't there but remember seeing many pics of this!).

I especially loved this blurb I found on their website, on what they stand for, "At Poetic Kinetics we believe everything in our man-made environment is designed; everything is a creative choice. Why not make those choices as enriching and stimulating as possible? We are focused on creating interactive and experiential public art installations that are functional, sustainable, and specifically tailored for the immediate community where the art will live."

On Display Until : Thursday, August 11, 2016

Parking: You can park underneath Pershing Square for $2 per each 15 mins.

Address: Pershing Square (532 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90013)

My awesome yogi-roommate Jessie!
Just another day in the life of the New Girl... I was recently driving around LA running errands and passed by the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (6000 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038). Directly across from the entrance of the Cemetery I noticed this incredible LOVE L.A. Skyline Mural and immediately added it to my list of LA street art I wanted to photograph! How incredible and beautiful is it? My roommate Jessie and I stopped here this past weekend to see it up close and take some awesome pics. I am unsure of who the artist is (I couldn't find a tag anywhere near the mural) but please let me know if you do so I can give them appropriate credit!

Looking for a colorful adventure in Los Angeles? Check out the intersection of Broadway & Cloverfield in Santa Monica. You will see an entire building at this intersection that is completely covered in beautiful and bright street art. A street art lovers paradise, with color and on every single inch of this building. According to Artect.net, "Three distinct art forms converge on the corner of Broadway and Cloverfield Boulevard in Santa Monica. A building clad in graffiti since 1991, by famed graffiti writers Slick, Risk, Den and Severe, now houses the digital artists of editorial studio Rock Paper Scissors and visual effects boutique a52. The latter perhaps best remembered for their avant-garde title design work on HBO’s Carnivale, and Rome." Photos of me by my friend Eve Meets West.

3 of my best friends & angels - Dacia, Elli & Megan!
The Global Angel Wings Project, led by artist Colette Miller, was created in 2002 to remind humanity that there is enough anger and bitterness on this planet and that we can be the “Angels of the Earth.” How beautiful and inspiring is that? She's painted wings in locations all over the world since the projects inception, and the wings represent love, peace, kindness, hope, and compassion.

I am so excited that I got to meet and have a lovely conversation with the ever-inspiring Colette Miller at the Street Art House opening event on August 26, 2015 – the artist behind this inspiring project! I’m all about the good vibes in life and think we need to spread them in any way we can…Colette just decided to get a bit more creative than some of us!

So, my friend, what uplifts you in life? Embrace the goddess within you and get your picture taken at one of these locations in LA:
  • Location pictured above: 8401 W 3rd St. (near the Beverly Grove)
  • Main street downtown - 446 Main street (between 5th and Winston)
  • Front of the House of Blues in West Hollywood off of Sunset Blvd.
  • West Hollywood: Santa Monica Blvd.  & Palm Ave.
  • Location pictured below: Korea Town, near Oympic and Irolo (near Normandie- Orange wall)

L.A. IS NO STRANGER TO STREET & PUBLIC ART

When I first moved to L.A, I had never before seen so much beautiful, colorful street art in my entire life! I admire and appreciate all of the beautiful, artistic souls we have in this city who paint incredible murals for others to enjoy & be inspired by.

I'm also a fan of public art because 1) it give individuals a platform to express themselves, 2) promotes the importance of art, creativity, and imagination in a society that thrives on structure, and 3) challenges us to stop and ask ourselves "Wait... What is that? How does that make me feel? What does this represent to me or my community?"
